Sandblasting
Sandblasting is crucial for proper surface preparation before resurfacing. We use professional equipment to remove old materials and create the perfect surface for new finishes.
Get Free EstimateSandblasting is a surface-preparation step, not a finished product — but skipping it or doing it poorly is the single most common reason a new pool finish fails early. If your existing pool has paint, heavy stains, scaled mineral deposits, or a delaminating prior coat, the substrate has to come back to clean concrete before a new plaster, quartz, or pebble surface can bond to it.
Our crews use professional dustless sandblasting equipment with non-toxic media (silica-free sand, soda ash, or high-pressure water depending on the job) so we can work efficiently in residential backyards across PA, NJ, and DE without dust drift across your property or your neighbor's.
When sandblasting is required
- Previously painted pools — paint must be fully removed before any plaster bond will hold
- Pools with multiple plaster layers stacked over decades — at some point the layers fail at the seams
- Severe iron, copper, or organic staining that acid-washing will not lift
- Calcium scaling above and below the waterline
- Delaminating quartz or pebble where the bond coat has failed
What the process looks like
Sandblasting is typically a 1-2 day phase inside a larger resurfacing project. We drain the pool, mask off the deck and surrounding areas, blast the entire interior with appropriate media, vacuum and rinse the residue, and then inspect for any structural cracks or rebar exposure that the prior surface was hiding. Anything we find gets repaired before the new finish goes on.
Why it matters for the new surface
Plaster, quartz, and pebble all bond chemically to the substrate. If the substrate has paint, oil, scale, or weak prior material, the chemical bond never forms — and the new finish will craze, blister, or delaminate inside a few seasons. A correctly profiled blasted surface gives the new finish 15-25 years of life. A bad prep gives it three.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sandblasting always required?
No. If the prior surface is sound plaster or quartz with no paint, we can usually acid-etch and bond directly. Sandblasting becomes mandatory when paint, heavy stain, or delamination is present.
Will sandblasting damage the shell?
No. We use the right media and pressure for the substrate. The process removes the surface coat, not the structural concrete underneath.
What about dust?
Modern dustless rigs reclaim media and dust at the nozzle. We mask deck, landscaping, and exposed equipment, and clean up at the end of every shift.
Can sandblasting expose existing problems?
Yes — and that is part of the value. Once the old surface is off, we see exactly what shape the shell is in. We document anything we find and quote any repairs before proceeding to the new finish.
Do you handle expansion-joint sealing as part of the same job?
Yes. Most resurfacing projects include or follow with new mastic in the coping-to-deck expansion joint and a polyurethane sealant on any cracked or open masonry joints, because doing them together is the only way to protect both the new finish and the deck.
